The Pontine Islands

CirceoCasaMare - Main routes

The archipelago of Pontine Islands is located almost at the center of the Tyrrhenian Sea, off the coast of Latium. It belongs administratively to the province of Latina and is composed of two groups of islands: Ponza (the main one), Palmarola, Zannone and Gavi in the north-west and Ventotene (the main one) and St. Stephen in the south-east.
Between the two groups are at about 22 nautical miles. In the center of the archipelago, isolated, there is the so called "rock of the barrel".
Ponza and Ventotene are the only inhabited islands and some refreshments are available in Palmarola. Zannone is part of the Circeo National Park.
In the small Saint Stephen Island, close to Ventotene, you can visit the Bourbon life imprisonment, with some of its cells still closed since he was abandoned in the 1965. An amazing place!
The pearl of the Pontine archipelago is the island of Palmarola, a few miles from Ponza. An absolutely charming island of white rocks with a turquoise sea all around, with caves, tunnels and shelters.
A daily ferry leaves from San Felice Circeo to Ponza. The ferry sets out every morning and cames back in the late afternoon.
